Withholding periods on penicillin products

We are aware that as part of the ACVM and MPI’s antimicrobial resistance reassessment review, pharmaceutical companies have been asked to review and update their labels in regard to appropriate dose rates for clinical disease indications where penicillin is an antimicrobial of choice.

As the wider veterinary industry has been aware, on label dose rates of many veterinary procaine penicillins were outdated and below therapeutic levels, so updated dose rates are now becoming available. The higher levels of antibiotic being administered means that withholding periods also need to be adjusted to ensure residues are being managed to comply with MRLs.

We, in conjunction with ACVM, anticipate having guidance about the implications and how to navigate these changes in a practical sense available for veterinarians shortly.
